While the late filmmaker William Friedkin is best remembered for directing the horror classic The Exorcistand the crime thriller The French Connection, a sizable portion of his fanbase swears by Sorcerer. The 1977 film underperformed at the box office upon release, but found a following over the next few decades. It’s now regarded as an underappreciated classic, with Friedkin himself calling it his favorite among his films, and Quentin Tarantino putting it on the same pedestal as Apocalypse Now. Friedkin maintained that the movie wasn’t a remake of a French-language classic, but rather an adaptation of the 1950 novel upon which the French classic was also based. The original movie is currently streaming in the United States on HBO Max, where a new generation of audiences can weigh it alongside Sorcerer.
