Harry Potter TV Show’s Kit Harington Says J.K. Rowling Books Helped Him Get Sober

Kit Harington opens up about how J.K. Rowling‘s Harry Potter book series helped him get sober ahead of his return with its live-action adaptation. Harington has joined Season 2 of the HBO TV show.

On Josh Horowitz’s The Happy Sad Confused podcast, the actor shared how Harry Potter audiobooks helped him in the period after quitting alcohol. “My brain is incredibly busy, especially at night, and I’ve always found going to bed very difficult, like, and my brain doesn’t turn off.”

The former Game of Thrones star added, “When I got sober, that got especially bad. So I started listening to Harry Potter audiobooks, and now they’re the thing I listen to every night. So they have a very special place in my heart, and when I knew they were doing this show, I think that’s a brilliant idea.”

Personal struggles that followed Game of Thrones

Kit Harington has previously revealed that Game of Thrones affected his lifestyle, despite the success it brought him through his iconic role as Jon Snow. He once entered rehab following an intense shoot for HBO’s blockbuster fantasy TV show, The Times reported.

“I entered rehab drunk, sobered up in there and went, ‘F— this, not you guys in a circle. No, thank you.’ And I left that pretty quick and said, ‘I’ll try to deal with this by myself,’ which didn’t work after about four years.”

Harington added, “The practicality of getting down to my work at the moment [I am] finding quite tricky. I don’t multitask well. If there’s more than one thing going on in my head, I get overwhelmed. I get incredibly fretty, anxious. My head’s all over the shop. I can’t deal with it.”

The renowned actor will next be seen in HBO’s Harry Potter TV series as Gilderoy Lockhart. It will mark his return to the Harry Potter universe after portraying Lockhart in an audio series.

Harry Potter TV show’s Season 1 will premiere on December 25, 2026, on HBO Max.
