Kit Harington talks playing Gilderoy Lockhart in Harry Potter show

Kit Harington revealed his excitement about playing Gilderoy Lockhart in HBO’s Harry Potter TV series on Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast. The actor confirmed he sorted into Gryffindor and called the casting “a very simple kind of yes, please.”

Harington described Lockhart’s defining trait through his approach to character work. “We talk about who they’re what they’re addicted to. He’s addicted to himself,” Harington said. He joked the role requires minimal adjustment from his real personality. “It’s just a tiny step to my left,” he added with a laugh.

The actor shared that Harry Potter audiobooks narrated by Stephen Fry hold deep personal significance for him. “My brain is incredibly busy, especially at night, and I’ve always found going to bed very difficult,” Harington explained. He started listening after getting sober, and the books became a nightly ritual.

Harington confirmed he has already started working on Lockhart’s look for the show. “Yes, and I’m going to say very little about anything because it’s highly secretive,” he said. He acknowledged the scale of stepping onto the Harry Potter set. “I’ve been on Game of Thrones, I’ve been on Marvel sets. That’s going to be crazy,” Harington admitted.

The actor also noted that the show’s proximity to his home factored into accepting the role. “What I was looking for work-wise was something that would be close to home so I could be a dad,” Harington said. He described filming the series as a perfect fit for his current priorities. “I get to be a dad. I get to go and play in a world I love. I’m very content,” he concluded.
