Chris Columbus is the director behind the first two Harry Potter movies. But he hasn’t held his tongue about his feelings towards the HBO-adapted TV series coming in 2027. The American filmmaker has yet again criticized the HBO show regarding the new Hagrid’s look.
Plenty of directors have shaped the Harry Potter film series, like Alfonso Cuarón, Mike Newell, and David Yates. But Chris Columbus deserves all of the credit for being the first Harry Potter director who shaped the beloved films.
However, the original director won’t be involved in the HBO series, believing “there’s nothing left for me to do in the world of Potter.” But, he supports a reboot if it includes the excluded book elements that didn’t make it in the films.
Production for the new Harry Potter series is underway, featuring a new cast and crew ready to create streaming magic. The HBO Original plans to be a “decade-long” project like the movies that came before. With episodes being an hour long and each season covering each book, there’s a great opportunity to faithfully bring J.K. Rowling‘s series to life.
What did Chris Columbus say about the Harry Potter show?
Shaun of the Dead’s Nick Frost will be playing the role of Hagrid in the HBO series. He previously said he’s not “copying” Robbie Coltrane’s performance as Hagrid from the film series. The British actor’s interpretation of the Hogwarts groundkeeper involves making him “funny and cheeky and scared and protective and childlike.”
After photos surfaced of Nick Frost dressed as Hagrid for the HBO series, Chris Columbus offered his critique to The Rest is Entertainment podcast (via Variety) about the photographs:
“So, I’m seeing these photographs… and [Nick Frost is] wearing the exact same costume that we designed for Hagrid. Part of me was like: What’s the point?” said the Home Alone director. “I thought the costumes and everything was going to be different, but it’s more of the same. It’s all going to be the same.”
Chris Columbus went on to say that he still found it “flattering” that they’re using a similar Hagrid costume that was in his Harry Potter movies. But at the same time, he described looking at Nick Frost’s Hagrid photos as a “sort of deja vu all over again.”
There may be plenty of familiar elements from the new HBO series that will bring us back to the movies that started it all. Nevertheless, the upcoming adapted show will also provide new elements from the books that never made their way to the final cut of the films. Expect to see the Harry Potter TV series on HBO sometime in 2027.
