Halle Berry’s Surprise Netflix TV Show Premieres on Streaming Service Today

Halle Berry makes a surprise appearance in a new Netflix series that premieres today. A Different World returns with a sequel series set at Hillman College, bringing Berry into its story through a character from the original sitcom.

The 10-episode series follows a new generation of students at the fictional HBCU. Maleah Joi Moon stars as Deborah Wayne, the daughter of Dwayne Wayne and Whitley Gilbert. Cornell Young IV plays Shaquille, whose family history connects Berry’s character to the new series.

Who does Halle Berry play in A Different World?

Halle Berry plays Jaclyn, Shaquille’s late mother, in A Different World. The character previously appeared in the original series as Ron Johnson’s romantic interest (played by Darryl M. Bell) during Season 4.

The sequel drops several clues about Jaclyn before revealing her connection to Shaquille. In Episode 2, he looks at a framed photo of Jaclyn and Ron from their Hillman days. Ron later discusses their relationship while telling Shaquille about his Valentine’s Day dating history.

Jaclyn becomes part of the Season 1 finale when Shaquille prepares to leave Hillman. Coach Deion Sanders offers him a spot on the University of Colorado football team, and while packing his dorm room, Shaquille places a framed photo of Jaclyn in his bag.

Young said he was “surprised and excited” when he learned Jaclyn was his character’s mother. He also explained how he viewed Shaquille’s thoughts during the finale, saying, “Mama, I gave it a shot. I tried. I told you I’d come [to Hillman], but I know you would want me to choose me and what makes me happy.”

Netflix’s sequel introduces new students while bringing back characters and references from the original sitcom. A Different World centers on Deborah as she starts college at her parents’ former school and works toward her own identity.

The original series also remains available on the service, allowing viewers to revisit the characters featured in the new series.
