Gisondo Teases “Gorilla Grodd” Originality

Production is underway in Atlanta on DC Studios’ “Superman” live-action spin-off series “The People vs. Gorilla Grodd” and so far there’s a lot of appreciation over the eight-episode series adopting a practical suit with animatronics.

Photos and videos have shown a series that seems to be embracing the tone of its crime-mystery-comedy series that sees Skyler Gisondo’s Jimmy Olsen and others at the Daily Planet reopenning a famous Metropolis murder case where Grodd was potentially wrongly convicted of killing his father, the King of Gorilla City.

“American Vandal” co-creators Dan Perrault and Tony Yacenda on board to write, executive produce and serve as showrunners and are said to be bringing that show’s sensibility to bear here.

Speaking with Collider while promoting Lance Oppenheim’s new film “Primetime,” Gisondo discussed about how the DCU series is different to almost anything else in the genre:

“This show, especially, is so fun because I’ve never seen anything like it – the idea of a mockumentary set in a superhero world. Tony [Yacenda] and Dan [Perrault] are such masters.

I was such an enormous fan of American Vandal, and so to be working with these guys whose work I love, I think this show is going to be a very unique angle on all of this stuff, and very unexpected in some way, and we’re having a blast.\

It’s a lot of verité stuff. It always feels very alive. We’re filming courthouse sequences where it’s just the CCTV cams, so it feels like a play. We’re just running through. So it’s been really fun. We’re only a little ways into it, so hopefully it turns out alright.”

The 30-year-old actor stars alongside Beck Bennett, Mikaela Hoover and Wendell Pierce repriseing their Superman roles. Mary Holland, Eduardo Franco, Arian Moayed, Andrew Leeds and Tim Baltz also star.
