George R.R. Martin is coming clean about his “abysmal” relationship with House of the Dragon showrunner Ryan Condal.

What did George R. R. Martin say about his issues with House of the Dragon showrunner Ryan Condal?

During the airing of House of the Dragon Season 2, Martin wrote a now-deleted blog post that mentioned a gripe he had with several changes Condal made in the TV adaptation of his book Fire & Blood. Since Martin’s blog post, his relationship with Condal has deteriorated.

“It’s worse than rocky,” Martin told The Hollywood Reporter. “It’s abysmal.”

Martin and Condal co-created House of the Dragon. Martin hired Condal to work with him on the adaptation, and in the development stages, the creative partnership flourished.

“I thought Ryan and I were partners,” Martin explained. “And we were all through the first season. I would read early drafts of the scripts. I would give notes. He would change some things. It was working really well — I thought.”

Martin then supported Condal when the latter butted heads with co-showrunner Miguel Sapochnik. After Season 1, Sapochnik, who won a directing Emmy working on Game of Thrones, departed the series. However, Martin explains how things changed with Condal while working on Season 2.

“Then we got into season two, and he basically stopped listening to me,” Martin said. “I would give notes, and nothing would happen. Sometimes he would explain why he wasn’t doing it. Other times, he would tell me, ‘Oh, OK, yeah, I’ll think about that.’ It got worse and worse, and I began to get more and more annoyed. Finally, it got to a point where I was told by HBO that I should submit all my notes to them, and they would give Ryan our combined notes.”

Things reached a heated conclusion during a Zoom call with the show’s producers and HBO executives. Martin disagreed with Condal’s ideas for Season 3 and allegedly said, “This is not my story any longer.”

Condal did not provide a statement in response to Martin’s comments in the interview. Last year, Condal told EW that he found Martin’s blog post “disappointing,” mainly because he loved A Song of Ice and Fire and called the author a “literary icon.”

“I can only hope that George and I can rediscover that harmony someday,” Condal added.

House of the Dragon Season 3 is expected to release later this year on HBO and HBO Max.
