Gary Neville is still adamant that Arsenal will clinch the Premier League trophy this season despite their 1-0 defeat to Liverpool on Sunday.

The Gunners have finished as top-flight runners up for the last three seasons in a row and haven’t been champions of England since 2004.

Neville tipped Arsenal for the title at the start of the campaign and is not changing his stance despite the narrow loss to Liverpool at Anfield.

Liverpool landed the Premier League trophy last term, finishing 10 points clear of second-placed Arsenal in the 2024-25 campaign.

This term, Liverpool sit top of the table on nine points with Arne Slot’s side the only team to win all three of their opening top-flight matches.

Arsenal’s pursuit of Piero Hincapie looks especially timely after William Saliba was forced off after just five minutes. Cristhian Mosquera deputised well in the Frenchman’s absence, but Mikel Arteta must be pleased to have another reinforcement on the way – Ben Fleming, sports reporter One position Arsenal are still lacking in quality is the left wing. Gabriel Martinelli doesn’t quite know when to release the ball and was kept quiet by Dominic Szobozlai all game. If Martinelli can’t do it against someone who isn’t a proper right-back, who can he do it against? – Charlie Barclay, sports video journalist Sunday proved to be yet another quiet afternoon for Liverpool’s record signing, Florian Wirtz. The German is still yet to get to grips with Arne Slot’s system and has left the Reds’ midfield looking unbalanced as a consequence – Ben Fleming, sports reporter The potential signing of Marc Guehi appears to have finally jolted Ibrahima Konate into action. The French centre-back delivered his most assured performance of the season so far and dealt with the threat of Viktor Gyokeres with ease – Ben Fleming, sports reporter Arsenal found it difficult to create much yet again, constantly passing it backwards to David Raya, who was then forced to kick it long. Noni Madueke was the only outfield player who was bright on the day, but was dealt with impressively by Milos Kerkez – Charlie Barclay, sports video journalist

‘There’s an element of belief I have that I think, ‘Go on Declan Rice, you can be that player that runs through’ – or ‘Martin Odegaard, you can be the player that scores in this game’.

‘Noni Madueke, I thought he had a good game today. I thought Eberechi Eze looked sharp when he came on.

‘So there is the talent there to think they can go and do it. But they’ve got to go and do it. It’s thinking it, it’s saying it, it’s doing it.’

Speaking earlier this month on Sky Sports about his Premier League title prediction, Neville said: ‘I have gone with the team I have gone with for the past three years.

‘[I feel] that they are reliable, solid and consistent, which I think is important.

‘They are consistently getting high points totals and finishing second to great teams, I think they have improved themselves, I think [Viktor] Gyokeres will do well for Arsenal.’

Arsenal next face Nottingham Forest in the Premier League on September 13 following the international break.
