From Bars to Bangers: HAAi’s ‘DIGITiSE’ is a Brilliant Sonic Leap

HAAi’s new album, DIGITiSE, out now on Mute Records, transforms contemplative ambient textures into complex, high-energy club bangers.

Australian-born and London-based HAAi (real name Teneil Throssell) is no stranger to the scene. She’s a songwriter, producer, and DJ whose time in music goes back much further than her decade in electronic music.

Before launching the HAAi alias, she played live in psychedelic rock and shoegaze bands, leading to her tenure in the trio Dark Bells. After that, she worked at a London bar that had a pair of turntables, so she brought in her record collection and started spinning. In 2016, she launched a monthly party called Coconut Beats at the bar, which later expanded into a party series at Phonox.

By 2018, HAAi was already doing well, but that didn’t mean Throssell was confident in her success. A last-minute request to deliver a BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix came calling. She’s recalled that the deadline was only about two and a half weeks, and she suspected that someone much bigger must have cancelled at the last minute.

But instead of panicking, she dug in deep and worked to make this her best mix ever. Her submission was so well received that it won the award as the BBC Radio 1’s Essential Mix of the Year, giving HAAi career a huge boost.

To date, HAAi has released two studio albums, Baby, We’re Ascending (2022) and HUMANiSE (2025), both on Mute Records. And now, she’s released her third album, DIGITiSE, on the same label.

DIGITiSE continues a journey HAAi has led, from music to contemplate at home to music that drives the club into a frenzy.

DIGITiSE is a clear evolution of HUMANiSE, symbolizing a digital evolution of the previous album’s analog themes. Case in point: the final note of “HQ“, the final track on HUMANiSE, is literally the opening note for “RE-HUMANiSE“, the opening track on DIGITiSE.

This is just one small nod to the complexities HAAi builds into her discography. Where her music is elegantly simple, the interweaving between her library is undeniably complex and brilliant.

For example, “Ignition,” the third track on the new album, is an evolution of “Go” from the previous album. This isn’t merely a remix; it’s a new rendition of a contemplative track that makes you move and groove without sacrificing any of the source material’s importance. In that sense, it’s more of a sequel. From the reimagining of individual tracks to enlisting choir collective Trans Voices for vocals once again, so many elements of this album are callbacks.

Whether or not you get lost in the connective tissue of these tracks, there’s no doubt you’ll enjoy them. There’s so much to appreciate on DIGITiSE, including how these tracks will play in the club. This album has purpose, importance, depth, and a sonic resonance sure to make future HAAi sets full of meaning and movement. I personally can’t wait to hear these tracks at the club!

DIGITiSE was created with intention: I wanted to make music I could play when I DJ. I wanted it to sonically spread across multiple lanes in the way I would play an all night long set. ‘I Wanna Feel Like Someone (feat. James Massiah)’ pushes the elements that I love most in dance music, bass and frequency, and ties it together with Motorik rhythms. And ‘Talking Walls’ (feat. Skybreak and Cantoalegre) is one to hug your mates to at the festival.
