Inspired by the central robot figure from author Isaac Asimov's Robot trilogy as well as his Foundation series, Demerzel casts a looming shadow over the galaxy. She's the last of her kind, an immortal robot entrusted with preserving a flawed Empire, who conceals both her identity and the fact that her warped protocols hold her hostage. "Humanity" is a limiting term for non-human characters, but Demerzel's sentience contains immense spiritual range: anger, grief, regret, shrewdness, and a soulful conscience.
