Donald Trump shakes Vladimir Putin’s hand during a joint press conference at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska, last August.A former UK defence secretary has said Donald Trump “wants Russia to win” the Ukraine war.
Ben Wallace said the US president believes “might is right” on the global stage, which is why he is siding with Vladimir Putin over Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
“His actions show he’s much more supportive of Russia than Ukraine and that should worry us all,” he said.
His comments came after Trump accused Zelenskyy of not wanting to agree a peace deal and said he should be replaced as Ukraine’s president.
Speaking to Radio 4’s PM programme, Wallace said: “I think he wants Russia to win.
“I think his national security strategy published at the beginning of the year was very clear: he believes in spheres of influence, he talked about the western hemisphere being the United States, and he thinks might is right and he recognises that Russia functions that way as well.
“In fact, the Russian foreign ministry welcomed Donald Trump’s national security strategy as being aligned with Moscow.
“Ultimately, he doesn’t want pesky people standing in his way. He does bully people, we can see that all the time, and brave President Zelenskyy is standing up to that, he’s fighting for survival.
“I think [Trump] would wish it all to go away so he can be a legend in his own golf tour and hope everything else moves on.

In an interview on Thursday, Trump said Zelenskyy was “not a good guy for us to deal with” and again suggested he should be replaced.
Claiming the war “should end soon”, Trump added: “I think they would both like to see it end, but I find Zelenskyy to be more difficult to deal with than Putin.”
