Paramount+ has debuted the first trailer for “Golden Axe,” a new animated meta comedy-adventure series based on the classic SEGA 1989 Arcade game, which launches on the streamer on September 16th.
Mike McMahan (“Star Trek: Lower Decks”) and Joe Chandler (“American Dad”) co-created the new TV series inspired by the side-scroller game in which you played one of three warriors fighting through the fantasy land of Yuria to try and defeat Death Adder, a villain who wields the titular Golden Axe.
“Widow’s Bay” star and Emmy winner Matthew Rhys plays Gilius Thunderhead, a grumpy battle dwarf with exceptionally poor hygiene and a chip on his shoulder.
“Spartacus” and upcoming “Wolverine” game star Liam McIntyre plays Ax Battler, a barbarian warrior with a strict code of honour and sweet golden retriever demeanor.
“Jury Duty” actress Lisa Gilroy is Tyris Flare, a female warrior considered deadly in a fight and even deadlier with her sharp wit.
Joining them is “Community” alum Danny Pudi as Hampton Squib, a naive, inexperienced first-time adventurer who has dreamt of questing his entire life but is wildly unprepared.
There are all sorts of homages in the trailer, which showcases the tongue-in-cheek tone the show is going for.
McMahan co-wrote the first episode with Chandler, both serve as executive producers and Chandler is the showrunner.
