NBCUniversal executive Donna Langley has revealed which scene from the Fast & Furious franchise they’ve regretted including in the final theatrical cut. This comes over two years after the latest installment, Fast X, was released in theaters. At the moment, the eleventh installment, titled Fast X: Part 2, is currently set to debut sometime in April 2027.

What Fast & Furious scene was a mistake for Universal?

During a recent interview at the Toronto International Film Festival, Langley admitted that it was a mistake to include the space scene in 2021’s F9: The Fast Saga movie. The said action sequence featuring Tyrese Gibson’s Roman and Ludacris‘ Ted in a rocket car actually received mixed feelings from fans, as some felt that the creative team may have taken the franchise too far.

“I’m sorry that we sent them into space. We can never get that genie back,” she said.

In addition, Langley also attributed the success of the Fast & Furious franchise to the team’s willingness to hear what the fans want.

“We knew that we had to figure out how to grow it,” Langley continued. “We made a conscious decision to pivot to a sort of globe-trotting heist scenario. Vin was an early adopter of talking to his fans directly. As we saw that growing, we saw where the conversation was going. We’ve always been very fan-first on the Fast franchise.”

At the moment, franchise star Vin Diesel is developing a brand new Fast & Furious short film, which will be a sequel to 2009’s Fast & Furious short film titled Los Bandoleros. Further details about the project’s plot and characters are still under wraps. As for Fast X Part 2, it will once again be directed by Louis Leterrier. While Fast X was initially going to kick off a new trilogy of Fast and Furious films, Diesel confirmed in February 2024 that the next installment will be a “grand finale.” There have been reports that the story may be a “throwback” to the original Fast and Furious movie, which could feature a different villain than Jason Momoa’s Dante.
