Rookie Isack Hadjar achieved his first Formula 1 podium at the Dutch Grand Prix – but accidentally broke his trophy in half while celebrating.

Oscar Piastri claimed victory at Zandvoort on Sunday in the first race since the summer break and staked a massive claim in the title race thanks to Lando Norris’ DNF.

The Brit was running second when his McLaren suffered engine failure in the closing stages, with his teammate extending his lead in the championship to 39 points.

Norris’ retirement allowed Max Verstappen to finish second at his home grand prix, while Hadjar remarkably held on to third-place and secured a maiden F1 podium.

Though he started fourth, no one expected the Racing Bulls star to hold onto his position, let alone gain, having not scored points since June and with his best finish up to today being sixth.

‘Outstanding day. I did not expect that waking up this morning,’ the young French driver said.

‘I was being very realistic. I knew there was George [Russell] behind me and both Ferraris.’

However, while celebrating with his team in the paddock, Hadjar may have been gripping his first F1 trophy too hard as it snapped clean in half, visibly stunning the rookie.

The images were reminiscent of Hungary 2023, when Norris accidentally smashed Verstappen’s winner’s trophy while popping open his champagne bottle.

Hadjar made the worst possible start to his F1 career, crashing out on the formation lap on his debut in Australia back in March, but has since put in a number of a great performances to climb to 10th in the standings.

Given his form, he has been touted for promotion to Red Bull for 2026 to race alongside Verstappen, with Yuki Tsunoda reportedly set for the axe.

‘Obviously, I thought my life was over [after his debut], but then you realise it can happen and you bounce back very quickly from that,’ the 20-year-old added.

‘Already finishing fourth on pure pace would have been a mighty result. But finishing third, I’m just over the moon.’
