With Euphoria Season 3 finally hitting the small screen after a prolonged wait and a modified cast, Barbie Ferreira, who left the HBO show after its second installment, has revealed the reason behind her surprising departure. In a recent interview, she stated that she chose not to return as Kat Hernandez in Euphoria to diversify her career as well as her acting skills.
Barbie Ferreira explains how leaving Euphoria helped her career
The Faces of Death star recently disclosed that she parted ways with the fan-favorite teen drama, despite its popularity, to pursue “different roles.”
“I wanted to do is act and be able to do different roles, and if Euphoria was going to serve that for me, I would have happily done it forever,” Barbie Ferreira noted while speaking with Deadline. “It wasn’t really letting me show my range. In fact, it was kind of diminishing as time went on, and it was like, what makes me happy is acting and growing my career.”
Further explaining her decision to leave Euphoria, Ferreira said, “What’s most important is the fact that I get to portray different roles and characters and learn about acting and filmmaking, and getting characters with depth, which I think Kat definitely had Season 1, but I don’t think that was really the tea after that. So, it just felt like a very personal decision where I, really deep down, don’t care if what I’m doing is the biggest show of all time, as long as I’m creatively fulfilled.”
The 29-year-old actress also mentioned that exiting the HBO show has allowed her to pursue more indie roles. According to her, such projects have allowed her to step out of her comfort zone, which might not have been possible in high-budget movies with “bigger directors.” As such, continuing to play Kat instead of going for more challenging roles “wasn’t worth it for my ambitions as an actress.”
Another reason Barbie Ferreira cited behind her exit from Euphoria was the scheduling conflicts that came along the way. “You have to get approval to do a movie, to leave town. You can’t do that for nine months,” she remarked.
Meanwhile, Euphoria Season 3 premiered on HBO on April 12, 2026.
