Jason Sudeikis kept fans waiting three years for the fourth iteration of Ted Lasso… and just like that, it’s already over.
The latest season of the award-winning Apple TV+ sports comedy featured all the heart and laughs that have become synonymous with Ted Lasso, welcoming new faces as well as saying goodbye to old favourites.
With the season finale premiering on Wednesday, many fans will now have begun speculating whether a fifth run could be on the cards in the future.
Here’s what we know so far…
Will there be a season 5 of Ted Lasso on Apple TV+?
The bad news is that Apple is yet to make an official announcement about the future of Ted Lasso.
However, it’s worth noting that ahead of the show’s return, co-creator Jason Sudeikis revealed to The Hollywood Reporter that he considered season four to be the first part of another three-season arc he had roughly plotted out.
Jason Sudeikis has indicated he wanted Ted Lasso to run for six seasonsIn other words, as soon as Netflix gives it the green light, it’s on.
Apple’s head of programming Matt Cherniss later told Deadline: “I know [Jason is] looking to jump into the next season soon, but to my knowledge, I don’t think we’ve gotten started on it yet.”
More recently, Ted Lasso’s executive producer Brendan Hunt explained to Variety: “[Jason] plays the cards close to his chest, and I’m not privy to whatever poker game that I hope is happening between the powers that be.
“I think we’ve always basically hoped we were coming back for more than one, but if it ends up just being one, then OK, that’s fine. It did end nicely. We’ll just have to see.”
What could season 5 of Ted Lasso be about?
In the Variety interview, Brendan added: “Ted and Beard as peers instead of hierarchically, I’m curious about that. Roy and Keeley becoming parents, curious about that. Rebecca married, curious about that. The fellas running the pub, and how’s the team going to take to Alice as their leader? These are all just more like questions than cliffhangers.”
However, he quickly pointed out that “there’s not yet any indication that we’re going to get to answer those questions”.
“So at the moment, they’re still lingering in the air,” he added.
What has the cast of Ted Lasso said about a possible season 5?
The fourth season of Ted Lasso paired Jason Sudeikis with new addition Tanya ReynoldsFortunately, Jason isn’t the only member of the Ted Lasso cast who’s game for more episodes.
While new addition to the show Tanya Reynolds told Decider that she and the rest of the cast have “no idea” if season five is happening, she acknowledged that there is “so much potential” and “so many possibilities” to explore future storylines.
She teased: “We’d be so interested in a flashback to our Arsenal days. We can get to the bottom of the beef.
“But also, I saw a clip of you guys playing football, and you all look so cool, and I feel jealous that I don’t get to play football. I’m grateful I don’t get to play football, because if I did, it would be horrendous and I would be a laughing stock. But you did all look very cool, so I’m like, ‘maybe’…”
Meanwhile, Brett Goldstein told Jimmy Kimmel last year that the future of Ted Lasso was “a conversation for Apple”.
“I think we’d love to do it forever, but I think there’s a limit to it,” he noted.
