When Van Halen split with David Lee Roth after the 1984 album and subsequent tour, the band's future was in jeopardy. As fate would have it, Eddie Van Halen was introduced to Sammy Hagar by their mutual car mechanic in 1985 and the rest is history. Hagar recently split with rock group Montrose and had just scored a solo hit with "I Can't Drive 55," which was produced by Ted Templeman, who also helmed every Van Halen album to that point. It was a match made in heaven, launching the most successful period for the band with Eddie Van Halen on guitar, Alex Van Halen on drums and Michael Anthony on bass and backing vocals.
