The Primetime Emmys could be getting a new home if negotiations for a new deal go through. Following last night’s 78th Emmys show, it appears viewers will have to look beyond NBC or Peacock if they want to see the best of television being celebrated in the future.

According to insiders, Emmys could soon move away from traditional broadcast networks for the first time in over 75 years. Variety has learned that Prime Video is in talks with the Television Academy to become the new home for the Primetime Emmys.

If the deal is finalized, it would mark the first time the Emmys have aired outside of broadcast TV since their inception. The deal follows a similar trajectory to The Oscars’ move to YouTube starting in 2029.

What’s behind the Emmys’ potential TV shake-up

The two parties began discussions after an eight-year agreement between the TV Academy and ABC, CBS, NBC, and Fox ended this week. The report reveals that under the current agreement, the broadcast networks paid $8 million every year to the Television Academy. It’s unclear what terms Prime Video will need to meet to receive the show.

The Variety report also revealed that the Television Academy was exploring several other options, including simulcasting the show across major TV networks. However, this idea was nixed due to the complexity of ad sales logistics.

While ratings for this year’s Emmys aren’t out yet, the show continues to draw viewers regardless of the distribution platform. 7.59 million viewers watched last year’s Emmys. This year’s awards show was held at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles and was hosted by Mariska Hargitay.

Widow’s Bay led the night with six wins, along with eight additional wins in the Creative Arts Emmys. Matthew Rhys became the first leading actor in history to win two Primetime Emmys on the same night. With the win, Rhys made history as the first male performer to win lead acting Emmys across all three categories: drama, comedy, and limited series
