Paddy Kirk is a free man in Emmerdale, but according to Dominic Brunt, he may not remain that way.

Our Pads has been through utter hell. Initially blissfully unaware of Celia Daniels’ (Jaye Griffiths) criminal empire that had permeated the village, extending its exploitative tendrils throughout and ensnaring various residents, including his dad, Bear Wolf (Joshua Richards), his discovery of the operation opened him up to a world of abject terror.

Dylan Penders (Fred Kettle), Paddy’s pseudo-adopted son, was long ensconced in Celia’s cruel grip, looking up to her son-turned-lieutenant, Ray Walters (Joe Absolom), who’d groomed Bear into becoming a part of their modern slavery racket.

After unhinged Ray dispatched Celia via a knife to the chest, he became fully unglued, attempting to kill both Dylan and Paddy. They were saved only by Bear’s interruption, when he accidentally strangled Ray to death.

Though the three attempted to hide Ray’s body and ensure Bear remained free, bloodthirsty detective DS Walsh (Amanda Ryan) saw to it that the truth came out.

With Bear accused of murder and Paddy and Dylan both facing charges for perverting the course of justice, it looked as though we’d be seeing the end of the village’s favourite vet, the loveable underdog and the deeply damaged former professional wrestler, especially amid vitriolic evidence from fellow former slave Simo (Steven Gidwaney). In the end, though, Dylan and Bear were found not guilty, while Paddy received a suspended sentence when the jury found him guilty.

Though the village at large was furious that Paddy wasn’t exonerated, he explained to his dad: ‘A man died, and even though he was evil and he was cruel, someone had to be held accountable for that.’

Due to the nature of the sentence, though, Paddy was essentially free to resume his life alongside his loved ones, as they try to navigate their new reality after the terror of being trapped in one of the darkest plots Emmerdale has ever aired.

Earlier this week, however, Dominic hinted at a very different outcome.

Appearing on Good Morning Britain on the May 5 episode, host Ed Balls asked Dominic: ‘What’s your feeling about whether he deserves [prison]?’

He playfully replied: ‘Well, you can’t go round murdering people, no matter what, then hiding bodies in vans. You can’t do it, can you?’

A panicked Kate Garraway interjected: ‘Oh, no! But what does it mean for you?’

‘[They] have to let the law take its course,’ Dominic continued to tease. ‘You have to believe in the legal system, don’t you? You have to. That would be no good for us in Emmerdale because the graveyard’s full at the moment. You have to go around murdering some people.’

Kate continued to seek reassurance that Paddy would be okay: ‘Just as long as this isn’t the end of Dominic as Paddy, because we love you in it.’

Dominic then dropped his most damning hint: ‘Well, I’ve got a bit of time off now, so I can’t tell you what happens. I might be on holiday, I don’t know.

‘On holiday at Her Majesty’s pleasure?’ Ed prodded, with Dominic again teasing: ‘Maybe, who knows!’

While this all came prior to the reveal that Paddy had escaped prison, does it indicate that, perhaps, he will eventually find himself behind bars?

With the rules of a suspended sentence dictating that any further criminal activity would see Paddy have to actually complete the sentence, will he find himself in any further hot water?

Or perhaps, it will be a holiday? God knows Paddy deserves a bit of sunshine, Dylan would appreciate the sand between his toes, and Bear could use a trip to an all-inclusive bar!
