Donald Trump has been hit with a brutal community note on X after making an embarrassing gaffe about the Vietnam War.

The US president made a basic error as he claimed he could have ended the conflict in a just a week if he had been in charge.

The war actually lasted 20 years and led to the deaths of more than 58,000 American service personnel.

Addressing a campaign rally ahead of Tuesday’s midterm elections, Trump said: “I could have won the Vietnam war in a week. They drop whatever the hell that red crap is they kept dropping in the forest – Agent Orange, even though it’s red.

“Agent Orange. They dropped it in the forest for years and years and years instead of going after Ho Chi Minh City and the different places. I would’ve won that war in one week.”

But a community note added to a clip of Trump’s comments posted on X makes clear that attacking Ho Chi Minh City – or Saigon as it was known at the time – would have been a spectacular own goal by the Americans.

It said: “Ho Chi Minh City was called Saigon during the Vietnam War and was the capital of US-allied South Vietnam; North Vietnam’s capital was Hanoi.”
