Dolly Parton to Receive VMA Tribute From Grammy Winner

Dolly Parton will receive a special tribute at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards. The tribute will celebrate the country music icon’s career and lasting influence. It will take place during the ceremony on September 27, 2026, at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. The performance will also mark the return of a Grammy-winning country artist to the VMAs stage after five years.

Kacey Musgraves will perform the tribute to Parton. MTV and CBS announced her appearance ahead of the event. Musgraves has previously paid tribute to Parton and has spoken about her influence on country music. She also performed Parton’s “Here You Come Again” during a recent concert in Boston.

Following Parton’s death, Musgraves shared several posts on X. She wrote, “Dolly. This really really hurts.” She also said she was glad Parton was with her late husband, Carl Dean. In another post, Musgraves wrote, “No one talk to me today. I’m really okay if my feed never goes back to normal. It’s not doom-scrolling, it’s Dolly-scrolling.”

Kacey Musgraves returns to the VMAs for the first time in five years

Musgraves will return to the VMAs for the first time in five years. She performed “Star-Crossed” at the ceremony that year. The song is the title track of her fourth studio album, which she released in 2021. Her 2026 appearance comes as she also competes for another VMA. Musgraves earned a Best Country nomination for “Dry Spell.” The nomination marks her third career VMA nomination.

Musgraves previously joined Parton for a performance at the 2019 Grammy Awards. The pair performed “Here You Come Again” during a larger tribute celebrating Parton’s career.

The 2026 VMAs will also feature several other major performances and tributes. Madonna will open the ceremony with her first VMA performance in 23 years. Nirvana will receive the Video Vanguard Award. Raye, Sombr, and Teddy Swims will pay tribute to George Michael.

Snoop Dogg will host the ceremony, which will air live on CBS and MTV on September 27.
