Dolly Parton reportedly refused to allow most friends and family to visit her on her deathbed. The country music legend is believed to have had only one person by her side during her final moments.

According to TMZ, Parton’s final wish was that she did not want her close friends and family to see her in a fragile state on her deathbed. The outlet cited sources who claimed that the only person by Parton’s side at the time was her longtime wig and makeup artist, Cheryl Riddle. This was because she wanted to look her best before she passed away.

TMZ noted, “Dolly figured Cheryl would see her anyway when she passed because she’d eventually have to do the hair and makeup regardless — so she was fine with her being by her side.”

How Dolly planned her final public appearance

Dolly Parton passed away on August 25, 2026, at the age of 80. The 9 to 5 star made her final public appearance just two months earlier. She surprised her fans at Dolly’s Tennessean Travel Stop in Cornersville on June 24.

Parton cut the purple ribbon to open her first-ever truck stop just an hour outside Nashville. “I’m sure some of you want to know why I wanted a truck stop,” the Rhinestone star shared at the time. “Well, I couldn’t leave it to beavers. I had to throw my squirrely little self in there.”

Parton’s family issued an official statement after her passing. “A rhinestone life that shone bright enough for the world to see, Dolly will forever stand as an inspiration not only through her timeless music and prolific songwriting, but also her wit, warmth, and kindness that made us all feel like family.”
