Disney+ has cast Catherine Laga’aia and Deacon Phillippe as the leads for its upcoming pilot, Spaceship Earth. The project draws inspiration from the landmark 180-foot geodesic sphere attraction at EPCOT in Walt Disney World.
While the physical theme park ride serves as a 16-minute chronicle of human communication through history, the Disney+ adaptation is pivoting toward a high-stakes sci-fi narrative. The plot centers on a critical mission to prevent a global cataclysm. When the mission encounters a major failure, teenagers from disparate points in the past and future are forced to work together to save humanity.
The series follows teenagers from the past and future who must collaborate to save humanity.
The casting of Catherine Laga’aia follows her breakout performance in the lead role of Disney’s live-action Moana, which released in July 2026 and grossed over $323 million globally. Starring alongside her is Deacon Phillippe, the son of actors Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe. Phillippe is also slated for upcoming roles in the Netflix romantic comedy Better Than the Movies and the film 4 Kids Walk Into a Bank.
The creative team for the Spaceship Earth pilot includes Jason Fuchs, known for his work on IT: Welcome to Derry, who serves as showrunner and co-writer. He is joined by co-writer Michael Waldron, who previously served as the creator of the Disney+ series Loki. Lee Toland Krieger is attached to direct and executive produce the pilot episode, which is being produced by 20th Television.
While based on the theme park ride, the pilot pivots toward a high-stakes science fiction narrative.
This project follows a long history of Disney transforming theme park attractions into narrative features and series, ranging from the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise to The Haunted Mansion. However, Spaceship Earth is currently restricted to a pilot order. This means that while production is moving forward on the initial episode, Disney+ has not yet greenlit the project for a full series run. A final decision on the show’s future will likely depend on the network’s review of the completed pilot.
