Tom Cruise‘s disaster comedy Digger reviews point to its biggest weakness. Director Alejandro G. Iñárritu‘s upcoming film sees Cruise in one of his most unconventional roles yet. Many critics didn’t like the humor, with some stating that the jokes are serious misfires.
At the time of writing, Digger has a 53% score on Rotten Tomatoes, with 75 reviews. “Cruise’s performance is undeniably energetic and frequently over the top, but the movie does not have enough comedy that genuinely lands to sustain that tone,” reads an excerpt from ComingSoon’s review.
IndieWire also noted that the film’s attempt at humor rarely works, stating, “Digger should be fun, but it’s not even funny, and the sweaty clumsiness of its punchlines and sight gags only serve to make the script’s galaxy-brained satire feel more like the stuff of an IMAX-sized JibJab cartoon.”
The Wrap also gave it a negative review, comparing its humor to a bad SNL sketch. “Digger is what happens when you give the week’s worst Saturday Night Live sketch an inexplicably large budget and delusions of grandeur,” notes the reviewer.
What else are critics saying about Tom Cruise’s Digger movie?
While the film’s humor hasn’t landed with many critics, most reviews have commended Cruise’s dedication to playing an outlandish role. Almost every review notes that Cruise’s performance is singular, standing out from many of his recent roles. Reviewers have also praised the film’s look and production design.
Alongside Cruise, Digger stars Riz Ahmed, John Goodman, Sandra Hüller, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Jesse Plemons. The cast also includes Robert John Burke, Emma D’Arcy, Burn Gorman, and Sophie Wilde. Iñárritu directs the film from a screenplay co-written by him, Alexander Dinelaris, Nicolás Giacobone, and Sabina Berman. The filmmaker joins Mary Parent, Cruise, and Michael Sharp as a producer on the project.
Digger opens in theaters on October 2, 2026.
