Digger is already sparking Oscar talk. However, one critic is backing a different contender over Tom Cruise. It’s Riz Ahmed, who plays Dr. Ganesh.

Fangirlish has gone so far as to call on Warner Bros. to launch an Oscar campaign for Ahmed. The review praises his performance and says it remains memorable after watching the film.

Meanwhile, Collider has focused its awards discussion on Cruise’s performance. Its review is titled “Tom Cruise Might Finally Win That Oscar for Digger.” Variety has also looked at Cruise’s Best Actor chances while describing Ahmed as a presence who elevates the film.

Riz Ahmed’s performance is drawing attention as critics assess Digger’s awards potential

Fangirlish directly makes the case: “Ahmed who delivers a powerful, hopeful, intense performance that is unforgettable.” The review also says he goes “toe to toe” with Cruise during their scenes together.

NME has also praised Ahmed without making the same Oscar argument. Its review states, “Riz Ahmed is great. The Cruise performance is solid.”

Mama’s Geeky also gave Ahmed’s work positive attention, saying,, “Tom Cruise and Riz Ahmed are both absolutely brilliant.” The review describes the movie as divisive while praising the two performances.

The Guardian takes a more critical view but still singles out Ahmed’s role. Its review says Ahmed is among the talented actors whose supporting parts are “underdeveloped or wasted.” The review also notes that Cruise, Ahmed, John Goodman and Sandra Hüller have roles that don’t get enough from the story.

Ahmed’s Dr. Ganesh is a scientist caught in the fallout of Digger Rockwell’s actions. Cruise plays the wealthy oil tycoon. The story centers on Rockwell as he responds to an environmental disaster linked to his actions.

Alejandro González Iñárritu directed Digger and co-wrote the screenplay with Alexander Dinelaris, Nicolás Giacobone and Sabina Berman.

The film opens in theaters on October 2, 2026. Rotten Tomatoes currently gives Digger a 54% Tomatometer score, reflecting its mixed early reception.
