From the time she achieved global female rapper fame, Cardi B has always been closely followed not just for her music or for the records she shatters but also for the controversies that seem to always orbit her personal life. Recently, a case has come into the public eye that helps provide context to a rumored controversy from 2018, the year Cardi B was pregnant for the first time. The new controversy involves allegations made by Emani Ellis, who worked as a security guard at a medical building in Beverly Hills. Ellis brought forward a lawsuit in 2020, stating that Cardi B attacked her physically, spat on her, and even gave her a cut on her face. Moreover, she stated that the entire episode left her emotionally traumatized and that she had to get plastic surgery because of the 'cut'.

What was the Cardi B security guard controversy?

Ellis recalled the confrontation as occurring soon after Cardi B stepped out of the elevator on the building's fifth floor, where her obstetrician's office was. Ellis approached her with the intention of greeting the rapper and said, "Wow, that's Cardi B." Her words, however, supposedly unsettled Cardi, who had not yet announced her pregnancy. According to Ellis, Cardi B then accused her of trying to leak private medical information. The security guard remembered Cardi B shouting: "Why the f--- are you telling people that you've seen me?"

Cardi B's alleged behavior towards Ellis didn't end with verbal attacks. Cardi is said to have insulted her appearance, spat on her, and even threatened her employment. The guard recalled the incident as deeply traumatizing; she claimed that the rapper's long nails left a painfully deep cut on her face.

What did Cardi B's lawyer say?

That's not what we heard from Cardi B's side during the trial. In an attempt to defend Ellis, her opponent's lawyer, Peter J. Anderson, also wanted to clarify the questionable and unfocused parts of Ellis's narrative in general and of the injury in particular. He wanted to make the point that Cardi B, rather than being a victim, was an aggressor. Anderson's theory was that Cardi B, with her first pregnancy, might have had a panic attack when a big lady came at her, leaving her mentally disoriented and trying to fend off the perceived threat.

With Cardi B in the witness stand, she acknowledged the heated words but repudiated any claim of having assaulted Ellis in any way. She recounted how she assumed the guard was wielding a phone and blindly tailing her, even after being instructed to cease. "I asked her, 'Yo, why are you recording me? Aren't you security?'" Cardi B pointed out to the jury. Cardi also explained how she was speeding up her pace to reach her doctor's office as quickly as possible, with Ellis continuing her pursuit, escalating her distress.
