Denzel Curry and Smino being cousins still wasn’t on our bingo cards.
Behind the scenes of the latest Red Bull 64 Bars episode, Curry sat down with Hip-Hop Wired and opened up about his excitement being invited back to the Red Bull booth to run it back.
“We came back, we had to do the repeat. The last time I came here I was with Tia and Key Nyata, we were promoting the cypher album. So they was like, ‘Man can you come back?’ I was like, why not.”
The Florida rapper has been applying pressure for years, but who would’ve known he wasn’t the only person in his family tree making a name for themselves? Smino, a St. Louis rapper, has also been making noise for years.
Back in 2022, both MCs found out they were blood cousins, despite growing up in two different cities. Denzel Curry tells Hip-Hop Wired the full story of how he found out Smino was his cousin
“We had this song that was a remix of a song that was on my project called “Unlocked.” We ended up sending it to Smino, he goes in and makes a joke on the record and said, ‘I have this theory that all country n*ggas are related, I got Curry’s in my family, we might be cousins.’ I called Smino and asked him who in his family is a Curry, he said his momma is a Curry. So I was like, sh*t we might be cousins. So I called my dad and I asked him if we got any family in St. Louis, not only did he say yea, he said, “Hell yea, if there last name is Curry, they are your cousins.'”
The story got even more interesting when Curry pulled up to Smino’s mother’s house in St. Louis, where they got the final confirmation.
“We over there showing pictures, I’m showing pictures, and then I got family members on the phone. One of them said, ‘Yea Willie Curry moved out there to St. Louis, had a whole bunch of kids, cause, he was a h*e.”
Once Denzel’s family member made that comment, Smino’s mother’s face went into shock, confirming that the two rappers were, in fact, blood cousins.
