Deafheaven surprise-released a three-song EP titled At Work in the Fields of the Bomb today, October 9, 2026. The project marks the band’s first new material since their 2025 studio album, Lonely People with Power, and signals a deliberate shift toward a more aggressive, high-velocity sound.

Produced by Arthur Rizk and released via Roadrunner Records, the EP consists of the tracks “Hunter,” “Three Princes,” and a sprawling 13-minute closer titled “Sorry Laid The Hearth.” Guitarist Kerry McCoy has described the new record as the “heaviest” and “hardest” material the band has ever released, moving away from the shoegaze-leaning textures of their previous work to revisit the ferocious black metal roots that initially defined them.

The EP’s title and central concept are inspired by Robert Del Tredici’s 1987 photo book, which documents the “banality of evil” within the industry of nuclear weapons manufacturing. This somber thematic weight is reflected in a short film for the lead track “Hunter,” co-created by vocalist George Clarke and director Nico Poalillo. The film features cinematography by Academy Award-winner Janusz Kaminski, whose involvement brings a cinematic depth to the band’s visual aesthetic.

Abstract industrial metal textures in black and white. The EP is described by the band as their heaviest and hardest material to date.

The digital arrival of the EP follows reports of early physical copies appearing at merchandise tables during the band’s current live dates. Deafheaven is presently touring as part of “The Poisonous Weapons Tour,” supporting Mastodon alongside Alcest.

The tracklist and runtimes for At Work in the Fields of the Bomb are as follows:

“Hunter” – 5:42 “Three Princes” – 7:15 “Sorry Laid The Hearth” – 13:04

While the band had been performing select new material live for over a week leading up to the release, the full EP is now available across all major streaming platforms.
