A DC executive revealed plans for a potential Justice League movie and confirmed other projects in development. During the conversation, the person also accidentally shared details about the rumored Gorilla Grodd series.
Peter Safran answers if a Justice League movie is on the cards for DCU
During an interview at the Supergirl premiere in Brazil on Sunday, DC’s co-CEO Peter Safran spoke about the projects the studio is currently working on. The topic came up when a reporter asked when fans could expect a Justice League movie in the DCU.
Safran said, “We’ll know eventually when you head into that direction, but [for now] we’re really just talking about those projects that we’ve announced.” He then listed the two upcoming series, Lanterns and Clayface, both of which will premiere on HBO Max later this year. He also mentioned Man of Tomorrow and Matt Reeves’ The Batman Part II, which are currently scheduled for a theatrical release in 2027.
The DC executive then said that they will introduce Batman in the DCU with Brave and the Bold. While this is great news, he did not share a release timeline for the film. Meanwhile, he seemed to regret discussing one specific project. Before he realized his mistake, Safran said, “We’ve talked about the Gorilla Grodd show for HBO that we’ll start shooting this year.”
The executive quickly said that he probably shouldn’t have said it. This is mainly because the studio never officially announced that Gorilla Grodd would appear in the spin-off.
For context, earlier claims suggested that a new spin-off series, likely titled “American Villain,” was in development. It will center on the Daily Planet journalist Jimmy Olsen and his investigation surrounding other villains in the city. Initial reports also revealed that Season 1 would feature Gorilla Grodd. Now Safran has confirmed not only the show’s existence but also the villain it will feature. And with the filming beginning this year, the release might be sooner than previously anticipated.
Meanwhile, the executive assured that they will share details about the future projects when the time comes. He said that the studio is currently focusing on getting the scripts and story right. He added, “We’re not in any rush. We want to do it right. We want to do it well, and we want the stories to be crafted in beautiful fashion.”
Based on Peter Safran’s statement, it could be a while before Batman: Brave and the Bold and Justice League hit theaters.
