Carnivàle is one of the most ambitious TV shows ever made, and one of the weirdest concepts to come out of HBO. At the time, they’d been reinventing various different genres — reinventing gangster stories with The Sopranos, reinventing cop shows with The Wire, etc. — but Carnivàle was a reinvention of storytelling and mythmaking as a whole. It deconstructs the fight between good and evil, and the conventions of dramatic storytelling.
