When Matthew Lillard finally steps into the Marvel Cinematic Universe on March 24, he won’t be fighting alongside Daredevil or trading blows with Kingpin. Instead, the veteran actor brings something far more intriguing to Daredevil: Born Again Season 2: a character who operates in the shadows where real power lives.

Matthew Lillard compares his Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 character to Cheshire Cat

When it came to describing Mr. Charles, Matthew Lillard reached for an unexpected comparison that encapsulates the character’s essence. “There’s this Cheshire Cat sort of energy about him,” Lillard told Entertainment Weekly.

The reference to Lewis Carroll’s mysterious grinning cat fits a character who seems to float through the corridors of power without ever appearing threatened by them. Season 2 finds Mayor Wilson Fisk tightening his authoritarian grip on New York City, rounding up dissidents and stuffing them into cages. Daredevil fights back as a symbol of rebellion. But Mr. Charles watches all of this from a distance, unimpressed.

“He is somebody who bends the ear of very powerful people around the world. So he’s not really interested in Gotham politics. He’s interested in world politics,” Lillard noted, using “Gotham” casually for New York without confusing Marvel and DC territories. “So when he is dealing and trifling with someone like Kingpin, he’s not that impressed. That’s all I can say, you know?”

The character exists in that upper echelon of global players. Marvel TV head Brad Winderbaum explains that Fisk’s rise puts him among international power brokers, and Lillard’s Mr. Charles represents that world looking in. Though Lillard shares no scenes with Cox’s Daredevil, the actor found plenty to sink his teeth into opposite Vincent D’Onofrio. The two previously worked together on the 2000 drama Spanish Judges.

While talking about Mr. Charles, Winderbaum stated, “You sort of can’t do too much with him in this world that’s really tense and really buttoned-down, and along comes, you know, Matthew Lillard chewing scenery.” “So for me, it’s a lot of fun. I think that he plays well in the world and I’m excited for people to see him,” he added.

Notably, Matthew Lillard spent three years as Dungeon Master for a D&D campaign featuring Daredevil: Born Again showrunner Dario Scardapane. That creative partnership around the gaming table led Scardapane to sort of craft the role of Mr. Charles for the actor.

Now, when Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 premieres, audiences will finally meet the character who grins while the world burns.
