There’s been a new pairing brewing on Coronation Street, and it’s already giving off serious troublemaker vibes. Jodie and Carl seem to be Weatherfield’s next chaotic duo, with sparks flying between two characters who aren’t exactly known for playing by the rules.
From the moment they crossed paths, there was an instant sense that these two were cut from the same cloth. Both a little sneaky, both not afraid to bend the truth, and both clearly enjoying the thrill of it. When Carl is spotted flirting with Jodie in the café, it doesn’t go unnoticed, especially by Ronnie, who’s less than impressed by Carl’s attitude given everything else going on. But if anything, that tension just adds fuel to the fire.
Carl, who’s already been stirring up drama left, right and centre, seems completely unfazed. After recently asking Debbie for a huge £10,000 to pay off Fiona, and actually getting it, on the condition he works to pay it back, it’s clear he knows exactly how to play people. And now, with Jodie in the mix, he might have met his match.
Jodie, for her part, isn’t exactly innocent either. Since arriving on the cobbles, fans have struggled to trust her. Next week, she admits to Gemma that she’s been quietly scheming and that she’s been targeting Mal’s business by leaving loads of bad reviews online as revenge for Bernie.
So when Carl starts laying on the charm, it’s no surprise she doesn’t shy away. In fact, she seems to enjoy the banter just as much as he does. There’s a playful edge to their interactions, but underneath it, you can’t help but feel like they’re both sizing each other up.
Elsewhere, Jodie’s been busy weaving herself into the lives of other residents too. Bethany, clearly cautious, starts digging into Jodie’s background, casually asking David about her childminding credentials and whether he’s done any proper checks.
But Jodie handles it smoothly. When the two meet for a drink, she turns on the charm, and things take an unexpected turn when Daniel, slightly worse for wear, has a go at Bethany over her past behaviour. Without hesitation, Jodie jumps in to defend her, and that moment seems to shift something. Bethany starts to warm to her, perhaps seeing a more loyal side beneath the surface.
Back at No.8, Jodie shares a different kind of moment with her brother-in-law, David. When he confesses he’s swapped their broken wheelie bin with Lisa’s brand-new one, Jodie is clearly amused. Their back-and-forth is full of cheeky humour, and David quickly realises he’s met someone who can match his wit, and maybe even outdo him.
But while Jodie is busy making connections, Carl’s world is getting increasingly messy. Debbie’s storyline takes a more serious turn as her health worsens, with her latest scan results confirming things aren’t improving. It’s a heavy moment, especially given everything she’s already dealing with.
Despite that, Carl continues to blur the lines, taking advantage of Debbie’s kindness while also trying to smooth things over with Ronnie after their confrontation. Ronnie, clearly suspicious, later approaches Carl claiming he wants a fresh start, but whether that’s genuine or part of his own plan remains to be seen.
And right in the middle of all this? Carl and Jodie are flirting like there’s no tomorrow.
It’s the kind of pairing that feels unpredictable in the best (and worst) way. They’re both clever, both a bit ruthless, and neither seems particularly interested in doing the ‘right’ thing. Which could make their budding relationship all the more intriguing.
