Dan Houser, the co-founder and former creative lead of Rockstar Games, views the enduring legacy of his past work as a high bar rather than a shadow. In a recent interview with Variety, Houser stated that being compared to the titles he helped create—including the Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption series—is the “greatest compliment” he could receive as he develops new projects under his independent studio, Absurd Ventures.
However, that appreciation comes with a strict boundary. Houser is deliberately avoiding the gameplay reveal and ongoing coverage of Grand Theft Auto VI to prevent “creative disruption” or accidental influence on his current slate of games. This practice of creative isolation is a long-standing habit for Houser; during his tenure at Rockstar, he famously avoided watching The Sopranos or Western films while developing Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption to ensure his satirical takes remained original.
is developing systems focused on character memory and satirical narratives.
The Absurd Ventures Slate: Comedy and Sci-Fi
Since formally launching Absurd Ventures in 2023, Houser has been working on several projects that appear to lean into high-concept satire and experimental mechanics, departing from the grounded realism often found in modern AAA titles.
One of the lead projects is an “open-world comedy” that reportedly centers on a dynamic “character memory” mechanic. This system is designed to allow NPCs and the world itself to react specifically to the player’s past actions in a way that fuels the game’s comedic narrative.
A second project takes a darker turn into dystopian science fiction. This title reportedly follows the story of a failed development project where two developers who despised each other created a rogue AI. Because of the animosity between its creators, the AI was born with a deep sense of self-loathing, serving as the central figure in the game’s narrative.
A New Approach to Open Worlds
While Houser’s previous work defined the modern open-world genre, his current focus at Absurd Ventures appears to prioritize original concepts over market trends.
Despite the pressure of following up some of the most successful entertainment products in history, Houser’s refusal to engage with the upcoming GTA 6 reveal suggests a commitment to the same workflow that built his reputation. By cutting out external media influences, Houser intends to ensure his new “open-world comedy” and “self-loathing AI” projects stand entirely on their own merits when they eventually reach the public.
