Crystal Lake Creator Explains Why Most Friday the 13th Fan Theories Are Probably Wrong

Crystal Lake has sparked a slew of fan theories online about its connection to Friday the 13th. The show’s creator has now weighed in on the speculations.

In a recent interview with Deadline, Brad Caleb Kane, the creator of Crystal Lake, revealed that the upcoming Friday the 13th prequel gives “certain explanations” about the iconic masked killer Jason Voorhees. However, Kane says the story is more “grounded in reality” than many fans believe.

“Listen, it’s hard for me to look at the theories that are bandied about, like, ‘There’s a strange yellow door. Are they making Jason a government super soldier? Is that the route they’re going down?'” Kane shared.

He continued, “And I just want to tell people that my wife said, ‘Don’t engage yet. Just let them have their theories and do their thing.’ But I don’t want people watching, thinking that we’re doing some sort of Stranger Things, Eleven, government super soldier. It’s not that, it’s its own thing.”

Teasing what the series has in store, Kane added, “It’s grounded in things that were going on in the 60s and 70s that sort of intersect with the theme of mistrusting our institutions. I don’t want to say too much more because I don’t want to get into spoiler territory, but I didn’t want people to think that we’re doing Stranger Things. This exists in the world of Friday the 13th, it’s grounded.”

What else do we know about the new Crystal Lake TV show?

Based on the Friday the 13th horror franchise, Crystal Lake is a prequel to the original 1980 film. The series stars Linda Cardellini as Pamela Voorhees, a grieving single mother whose son Jason drowned in a lake last summer. When some mysterious figures from her past surface, Pam takes deadly measures to make sure her secrets don’t come to light.

The series also stars William Catlett, Devin Kessler, Cameron Scoggins, Gwendolyn Sundstrom, and Callum Vinson.

Crystal Lake premieres on Peacock on October 15, 2026.
