Coronation Street has picked up a string of trophies including Best Soap at the Inside Soap Awards, proving it’s still very much a titan on the genre.

The ITV serial drama came back fighting as it collected an impressive five gongs in the viewer-voted ceremony, which takes place on Monday evening, including Best Actress for Lisa Swain star Vicky Myers and Best Partnership for Lisa and Carla Connor.

Best storyline went to Mason Ratcliffe’s death and Abi Webster’s subsequent PTSD while David Platt legend Jack P Shepherd was awarded Best Comic Performance.

EastEnders, meanwhile, enjoyed similar success, picking up five trophies as well, including Best Actor for Phil Mitchell star Steve McFadden and Best Newcomer for Laura Doddington, who plays Nicola Mitchell.

Best Exit went to Martin Fowler star James Bye, who left amid the 40th anniversary celebrations, while Nish Panesar star Navin Chowdhry was awarded Best Villain.

Heather Peace, who plays Eve Panesar-Unwin, secured the Soap Superstar accolade. When choosing their winner, fans called Heather ‘a Northern powerhouse’ and ‘an icon who has always fought for others.’

Back to the Inside Soap Awards and Emmerdale received three gongs, with the Dingles winning Best Family for the fifth time.

Neighbours star Stefan Dennis, who is currently competing on Strictly Come Dancing, secured Best Daytime star while the beloved Aussie soap was awarded the Outstanding Achievement Award ahead of its untimely end.

And Casualty star Michael Stevenson, who plays Iain on the BBC medical drama, was named Best Drama star.

It’s been quite a year for the soaps and fans have certainly had their say. EastEnders celebrated its 40th anniversary while Hollyoaks will mark their 30th in October and Corrie its 65th in December.

There’s also the highly anticipated return of Brookside, which will coincide with Hollyoaks’ big milestone, not to mention the long-awaited Corrie and Emmerdale crossover in January, so there really is plenty to be excited about as fan of the genre.
