What’s Christmas without a festive angel? Coronation Street has got six, and according to producer Kate Brooks, there’s major drama ahead.

Debbie Webster’s (Sue Devaney) battle with dementia has been a gruelling watch. The light at the end of the tunnel? Her angels.

That’s the name given to her mighty menopausal Mancunian girl squad comprised of her five besties –Abi Webster (Sally Carman-Duttine), Bernie Winter  (Jane Hazlegrove), Christina Boyd (Amy Robbins), Sally Metcalfe (Sally Dynevor) and Glenda Shuttleworth (Jodie Prenger).

Throughout Debbie’s ordeal, they’ve kept us smiling with their matey brander and sheer warmth – no small feat given the fact they live on the most dramatic street in Greater Manchester.

Each woman has their own struggle right now, which will be pulled into sharp focus in an upcoming episode focused on the women.

In a recent interview with Metro, Kate Brooks gave us the skinny on what’s coming up for all the Angels this Christmas and beyond, starting with the one and only…

Glenda Shuttleworth

The younger sister of Undertaker George Shuttleworth (Tony Maudsley), Glenda’s had a relatively quiet year on the Cobbles for such a colourful character, typically having a supporting role in other stories.

As well as offering support to Debbie, she’s struggled to maintain her friendship with Todd Grimshaw (Gareth Pierce) during his recovery from his abusive relationship with Theo Silverton (James Cartwright).

So it’s lovely to hear from Kate that Jodie’s about to get a story of her own… and it’s a romance.

‘We have got a big storyline coming up with Glenda in the new year, which will really unpack Glenda as a character. She’s obviously a fabulous character and very Elsie Tanner.

‘There is a big storyline which will hit the screens around March. There will be a love interest. There is a big test coming up as well. There may be love on the horizon and a happy ever after. I think Glenda is in need of some happiness. It’s a big story and it’s not just completely pertaining to a love story. ‘

That’s not all. Glenda’s obviously tied to Christina, seeing as she’s in a relationship with George. So presumably she’ll have a lot to say when Christinais revealed as the secret grandmother of traumatised teen Lucy Parkinson (Anya Dewin). Kate Brooks confirms this.

‘Obviously the Lucy storyline is still kind of ongoing and it does reach quite a big climax in the near future. I love Christina and George. We’ll definitely be seeing more of that, more of the Shuttleworth as a family unit. Especially given that Glenda is Christina’s sister in law. Exploring that dynamic between them. This is the tip of the iceberg for the storyline. It does get quite big, and there’s more twists and turns.’

That brings us neatly to…

Sally Metcalfe and Christina Boyd

Foster-mum Sally’s skills were put to the test when her husband Tim (Joe Duttine) decided to take in Lucy, the daughter of his cousin Richie, (Nathan Sussex), who seemingly murdered his wife Rachel during a heated dispute.

What nobody expected was for Christina to be catapulted into that story when she was revealed to be Rachel’s long-lost mum, and therefore Lucy’s grandmother.

Now they have a child’s welfare in common, Kate teases what we can expect from these two going forward – and it sounds like a rollercoaster.

‘The Lucy story, what I love about Christina and Sally is that you’re never quite sure where it’s going to land, whether they’re going to end up exploding or whether they’re going to be hugging and kind of telling each other how wonderful they are.’

‘I love that unpredictability about it. In terms of the Lucy story, that does reach a big climax soon and it puts Christina and Sally at the heart of it. Lots of stuff for each of these women, but the key thing that doesn’t change is their friendship.’

Speaking of friendship, one of Debbie’s Angels is about to need a friend more than ever…

Abi Webster

Abi Webster’s not had a great 2026, which is about what you’d expect for anyone who leaves their husband for Debbie’s love rat son Carl Webster (Jonathan Howard).

After months of carrying on with his uncle’s wife, it didn’t take Carl long to get bored and leave Abi in the lurch.

You might think that her betrayal of Kevin (Michael Le Vell) would make her persona non Grata with the Websters. But Debbie still stuck with her, and their friendship continued to blossom.

Now that friendship seems to be more important than ever, as Kate reveals a brand new Abi story that sees the two women thrown together once more.

‘We’ve seen a bit of the old Abi crop up. The old Abi reemerges in the Christmas period, but just seeing the different place she’s in now, it is whether her family and friends are able to make sure that she gets back on the right track. It’s going to be a bit of a bumpy ride.’

‘There’s a few curveballs, but a friendship with Debbie as well is very kind of important. There’s big stuff coming up in the spring which really puts them at the heart of it.’

Last but not least, let’s talk about the woman surrounded by the angels. The legend that is…

Debbie’s last Christmas will be ‘insanely good and powerful’. (Picture: ITV)

Nobody wants to say goodbye to Debbie. But according to Kate, as the dementia story reaches its tragic climax, Debbie is set to go out in true Debbie style – in a blaze of glory.

‘We’ve got some really special stuff coming up with Debbie.’ Kate reveals. ‘Sue is incredible. Every single episode I see, I am just completely blown away. We’ve got a really special episode coming up over the Christmas period, which I viewed yesterday. It’s insanely good and powerful.’

‘This one is a performance like you’ve never seen before. As Debbie’s dementia declines, we’ll get to the tough parts of it as the family starts to rally around. A family will become really key ingredients into rallying around her and making sure that she’s okay and she’s supported.’

‘There will be fun along the way, but we start getting to the stage now where it’s getting a bit more serious.’
