Cornell University’s internal disciplinary committee expelled Jonathan Newell after concluding he had non-consensual sex with a student identified as Jane Doe, according to investigative records. The university’s Title IX panel found Newell responsible for sexual assault and noted he had manipulated the victim to ingest ketamine during an October 2024 incident at a fraternity party.
The internal finding, confirmed by the victim’s attorney Thomas Giuffra on October 9, 2026, highlights a significant discrepancy between the university’s disciplinary actions and the initial law enforcement response. Despite the university’s conclusion that the encounter was non-consensual, Newell and six other men named in a subsequent civil lawsuit were not immediately charged with a crime. Newell and the other defendants have denied any wrongdoing through their legal representatives.
Newell was serving as a trained event monitor for the fraternity on the night of the incident.
Role as Safety Monitor
At the time of the incident, Newell was designated as a “trained event monitor” for the Chi Phi fraternity. In this capacity, he was officially responsible for ensuring the safety of guests and overseeing the conduct of those attending the party. Confidential investigative records obtained from the university describe Newell’s role as a safeguard that night, a detail that has become central to the civil litigation filed by Jane Doe in September 2026.
Criminal Investigation Reopened
The criminal investigation into the incident was reopened by New York prosecutors in late September 2026 following public scrutiny of the case and the “Cornell 7” lawsuit. The Tompkins County District Attorney’s office is now reviewing the evidence that led to the university’s internal finding of sexual assault.
While the civil lawsuit seeks damages for the alleged assault and the university’s handling of the matter, the reopened criminal probe remains in its early stages. No criminal charges have been filed against Newell or the other six defendants since the investigation was renewed.
