Political analyst Matthew Dowd is no longer part of MSNBC following comments he made about conservative activist Charlie Kirk during the network’s coverage of Kirk’s death. Dowd was fired following a backlash over his remarks, which many critics deemed insensitive.

Reports claim MSNBC fired Matthew Dowd over comments on Charlie Kirk

Kirk, the 31-year-old co-founder of Turning Point USA, was shot and killed at a college event in Utah on Wednesday. As details unfolded live on MSNBC, anchor Katy Tur turned to Dowd and asked about “the environment in which a shooting like this happens.”

Matthew Dowd responded by describing Kirk as “one of the most divisive, especially divisive younger figures in this, who is constantly sort of pushing this sort of hate speech or sort of aimed at certain groups.” He added, “Hateful thoughts lead to hateful words, which then lead to hateful actions. And I think that is the environment we are in. You can’t stop with these sort of awful thoughts you have and then saying these awful words and not expect awful actions to take place. And that’s the unfortunate environment we are in.”

The clip spread quickly online, drawing widespread criticism. Many accused Dowd of speaking insensitively so soon after Kirk’s death. MSNBC president Rebecca Kutler issued a statement in response on X. “Matthew Dowd made comments that were inappropriate, insensitive and unacceptable. We apologize for his statements, as has he. There is no place for violence in America, political or otherwise,” she said.

Facing mounting outrage, Dowd took to BlueSky to issue his own apology. “My thoughts & prayers are w/ the family and friends of Charlie Kirk. On an earlier appearance on MSNBC I was asked a question on the environment we are in. I apologize for my tone and words. Let me be clear, I in no way intended for my comments to blame Kirk for this horrendous attack,” he wrote.
