Clayface Trailer: Why Horror Movie May Explore James Gunn’s DCU More Than Fans Guessed

The Clayface trailer may be revealing more details about the DCU than fans expected. The upcoming horror film will be the third movie in DC Studios‘ new cinematic universe, which began with James Gunn‘s Superman. The film has already been confirmed to take place before Superman and will introduce the audience to a new Gotham City.

What does the Clayface trailer tell us about James Gunn’s DCU?

The new trailer suggests that it will introduce the DCU’s Gotham City. However, one scene hints that the story may extend beyond Gotham City. After going through an experimental procedure, Matt Hagen is shown discovering its side effects while flying in an airplane, which leads to a gruesome sequence. Previous shots in the trailer confirm that his face was disfigured while he was in Gotham City, so his taking a flight to an undisclosed location is notable.

Until now, audiences have already been introduced to various locations in the DCU. Starting with Metropolis, the DCU has taken viewers to Krypton, Barenton, Pokolistan, and even Washington State. Clayface may or may not feature Batman, depending on several reports, but it seems like Matt Hagen’s journey will take him to interesting places.

The upcoming film is directed by James Watkins from a screenplay by Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini. However, Watkins recently revealed that the script underwent some changes that notably removed some mystical elements. In a recent interview, DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran said that the studio isn’t worried about the film’s box office performance.

Clayface stars Tom Rhys Harries, Naomi Ackie, Max Minghella, David Dencik, and Eddie Marsan. The film also added a Breaking Bad star in an undisclosed role. The new trailer’s dark tone proves that DCU is open to taking more creative swings under Gunn and Safran’s leadership.

Clayface arrives in theaters on October 23, 2026.
