Cillian Murphy told The Observer that his role in 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple is limited. He explained that he is “only in it for a little bit” but that his appearance in the second film sets him up to become a central character in the planned third entry. Murphy added, “Everyone’s got to go and see the second one. I’m sure they will – it’s really, really good.”

Murphy did not return for 28 Weeks Later but reprises his original role as Jim from Danny Boyle’s 28 Days Later in 2002. Director Nia DaCosta has already completed filming The Bone Temple. The story continues the franchise’s timeline decades after the Rage Virus outbreak. The film will release in January 2026 and introduces new survivors alongside the returning character.

Danny Boyle, who directed the original, confirmed that he used Murphy’s appearance as a key element to secure momentum for the trilogy. “She gets a bit of Cillian at the end. All I can say is you have to wait for Cillian, but hopefully he will help us get the third film financed,” Boyle stated (via Business Insider).

The director further explained, “You promise Cillian Murphy, that’s quite a deflection of any technical concerns, they soon forget. Yeah, we nakedly used that to get our own way. What better promise could you make?”

Murphy emphasized the importance of the second film’s reception and noted that audience response will determine whether the trilogy continues. “Everyone’s got to go and see the second one,” he said, linking his expanded role in the third film to its success.

28 Years Later: The Bone Temple features Ralph Fiennes, Jack O’Connell, Alfie Williams, Erin Kellyman, and Chi Lewis-Parry. The film will hit theaters on January 16, 2026. The story shows survivors facing threats rooted in human cruelty, making the infected no longer the only danger.
