Christmas Special of Iconic Sci-Fi Series Canceled, BBC Reveals Future

The BBC has canceled the Christmas special of its iconic series, Doctor Who. In October 2025, the corporation announced that the fans would get a new Christmas special episode this year. The episode was supposed to be written by Russell T Davies, who also announced his exit.

BBC reports the future of Doctor Who after Christmas Special cancellation

The British public service broadcaster recently announced that they have canceled the Christmas special episode of the fan-favorite sci-fi series. Additionally, they are inviting companies to pitch in to assist them in co-producing the next part of Doctor Who.

The BBC mentioned, “As part of securing the next phase of the show for future generations, and in line with the BBC’s Charter and Agreement requirements, the BBC will put Doctor Who out to competitive tender this year…After careful consideration, the BBC, Russell T Davies, and Bad Wolf have collectively decided not to go ahead with the previously announced Doctor Who Christmas episode.”

Explaining the reason, the BBC asserted that it would invest in the “long-term future of the show.” They stated that the network does not want to go with a special at this time, solely to provide viewers with Doctor Who content. The BBC further added that the animated series of Doctor Who, which they previously announced for CBeebies and BBC iPlayer, is currently in the works.

On the other hand, Russell T Davis penned a note on Instagram for the fans announcing his departure. He said the BBC decided to produce the Christmas special because they had no idea about the future of Doctor Who. However, as they have now revealed their plans, “there’s no need for” the Christmas special.

Davis addressed the viewers and continued, “You’ll have to wait a bit longer for new Doctor Who… but you’ll be waiting for MORE Doctor Who than a one-off. So it’s worth it!”
