Charli XCXFollowing the mammoth success of her seminal album Brat, Charli XCX has made no secret of the fact that she’s been hoping to try something different for her next project.
During a new interview with British Vogue, the Grammy winner opened up about exactly what this will entail, revealing she’s been hard at work on a rock album.
“If I’d made another album that felt more dance-leaning, it would have felt really hard, really sad,” she explained.
“But what is interesting to me is to bend the possibilities of what my perspective on that could be.”
Charli told the magazine that she was secretly already working on the rock-based project when she made an appearance at Paris Fashion Week late last year.
“We knew we wanted to go to Paris to do it,” the Von Dutch singer said. “We knew it would be this very hectic, rich time and we like creating in that kind of atmosphere.”
“For me, it’s fun to flip the form,” she continued, referring to her new, more instrument-based sound, compared to the electronic dance-pop she’s known for. “We know there’s gonna be people who are bothered by it, but that’s fine.”
Charli unveiled her first studio album True Romance in 2013, and continued to release music with varying levels of commercial success in the years that followed.
This reached new heights in 2024 when she released Brat, which earned Charli her first UK number one single in more than a decade with the Billie Eilish collaboration Guess, as well as five Brit Awards and three Grammys.
More recently, she also topped the UK charts with her companion album to Emerald Fennell’s Wuthering Heights movie, featuring the singles House and Chains Of Love.
