Freehold Games is returning to its community-focused development roots for the first major expansion of its deep science-fantasy roguelike. The upcoming DLC, titled Caves of Qud: Diaspora, is scheduled to launch into Early Access on December 9, 2026, with a starting price of $14.99.

The decision to release the expansion in Early Access follows the base game’s own lengthy development path. Caves of Qud officially reached version 1.0 on December 5, 2024, after nearly nine years on Steam and 17 years of total production. By utilizing the Early Access model for the Diaspora expansion, the developers plan to implement a steady cadence of content updates throughout 2027, mirroring the iterative process that shaped the original game.

New Genotypes and Mounts

The Diaspora expansion introduces substantial changes to the game’s character creation and world interaction. Players will have access to entirely new genotypes, moving beyond the traditional humanoid mutants and True Kin. The DLC will allow players to start as mutated animals, including cats, dogs, frogs, and chameleons, each bringing unique biological traits to the procedurally generated world.

In a significant shift for the title’s complex ecosystem, the expansion also introduces mutated plant genotypes. Players will be able to play as sapient trees and vines, adding a new layer of mechanical depth to the game’s survival and combat systems.

The expansion further iterates on the game’s existing factions and travel mechanics. Dromad caravans, a staple of the trade economy in the salt deserts, are receiving updates to their behavior and inventory. Additionally, the massive saltback tortoises that roam the world will become mountable for the first time, providing a new method of traversing the often-lethal terrain of Qud.

Technical Roadmap

While the base game remains in a stable 1.0 state, Diaspora will function as a living project. The December 2026 launch represents the beginning of the expansion’s public development phase. Freehold Games has indicated that the narrative themes of the expansion will focus on concepts of migration and environmental shifts, reflecting real-world parallels within the game’s surrealist setting.

The developers have confirmed that the initial release will be followed by several major content drops over the following year, ensuring that the expansion benefits from player feedback before reaching its final version.
