Captain America’s Tunnel Chase Wasn’t Civil War’s Toughest Scene To Film

The Russo Brothers have revealed which Captain America: Civil War scene was the most challenging to shoot. The directors shared details about filming the sequence in a recent interview celebrating the movie’s 10th anniversary.

In honor of Captain America: Civil War’s 10th anniversary on May 6, directors Joe and Anthony Russo sat down for an interview to discuss the making of the beloved Marvel installment. At one point during the interview, the brothers recalled which scene from the movie was the most difficult to film.

Speaking with CBR’s Sean O’Connell, the Russos revealed that the iconic airport scene was exhausting to shoot. Joe Russo said that the scene “was a grind only in that we did a lot of that on a back lot in Atlanta and there was a heat wave.”

The director went on to explain how the extreme temperatures impacted the filming process. “It was like we’re on a black top, you know, because we recreated the airport…temperatures were clocking in on the black top of like 135°.”

He continued, “And people’s shoes, the bottom of their shoes were melting if they stood in one place too long because we’re on this black top.”

Paul Bettany, who played Vision, also had an uncomfortable experience that led to some technical issues while filming. “I just remember we had Bettany hanging from wires and he was in this suit in this heat,” Joe recalled.

“He lifted his arm to point and a little seam broke in the suit and there was so much sweat that it just started streaming like a fountain out of his suit,” the director shared. He then concluded, “We were like ‘bring them down, bring them down,’… so that was definitely the hardest.”

Later in the interview, the Russos also revealed that the foot chase scene with the late Chadwick Boseman’s Black Panther and Sebastian Stan’s Bucky Barnes was “the most exciting” to shoot.
