Amid speculations of which members from the original Buffy the Vampire Slayer series would be reprising their roles for the upcoming revival show, James Marsters, who portrayed William ‘Spike’ Pratt, has inadvertently teased his return in New Sunnydale. In a recent interview, the television veteran talked about his potential comeback to the Buffy setup without giving a definitive reply.
James Marsters recently rewatched the Buffy series due to the ‘whole reboot issue’
During a recent conversation with his Buffy the Vampire Slayer co-star Charisma Carpenter, the 63-year-old actor revealed that the revival talks made him go back to the original series.
“It’s so funny. I watched initially, like we all did, to see how we looked in the episodes. And then I didn’t rewatch for a long time,” said James Marsters on The B—- Is Back podcast. “I recently did, just because of this whole reboot issue. I had to go back and watch it, just to ask myself, ‘Can you play that character again? Never mind the externals. Can you internally get back to that psychology?'”
Before Marsters could finish his account, Carpenter interrupted him and asked if he had just admitted Spike’s involvement in Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale. “I’m not. No,” he replied bluntly. “I have no idea. What can I say, there is interest in having me back.”
The Smallville star then detailed how he would orchestrate Spike’s return in Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale. He stated, “If I was producing a reboot, I wouldn’t call me yet. [First] I would have to do the origin story of the new Slayer, I would have to introduce all of her friends, I would have to set up the new world, and I would have to get them in at least one adventure together before I dropped in any other characters, whether it’s other new characters that I imagine, or its characters from the original show.”
Lastly, James Marsters provided a realistic timeline for Spike’s appearance in the Buffy the Vampire Slayer revival, noting, “I wouldn’t imagine that I would be called until — the earliest would be the end of Season 1, possibly into Season 2.” He concluded, “I would be surprised I was not called, and I would be surprised if I was called now.”
