Brandon Sanderson’s Mistborn Apple TV Movie Just Cleared Its Biggest Hurdle Yet

Popular fantasy author Brandon Sanderson has shared a major update on the upcoming Mistborn movie from Apple TV. Back in January, the announcement came that Apple TV is developing films and TV shows based on Sanderson’s Cosmere universe. Since then, Sanderson has given consistent updates on the projects.

Sanderson took to social media to reveal he has finished writing the first draft for the Mistborn film. The author shared a photo of the screenplay, writing in the caption, “After many months of work, I’m thrilled to announce the first draft of the Mistborn screenplay is done! Just in time to celebrate the book’s original publication, twenty years ago this month.” He then urged fans to “remember that this is just an early step in a very long process,” before adding that he was “terribly excited by how it turned out.”

The original reports about the adaptations underscored the rarity of the deal between Sanderson and Apple TV. The Hollywood Reporter cited sources to note that Sanderson had unparalleled control over his books’ transition to the screen, elaborating that the author would write, produce, consult, and approve movies based on the Mistborn books and TV shows based on The Stormlight Archive series.

In the following months, Sanderson provided regular updates on his progress, as he does with his books. However, as he mentions, it might be a while before the movie comes out.

Mistborn books take place in a world in which the magic system of Allomancy gives people magical powers when they use and burn various metals. The original trilogy of books — The Final Empire,
The Well of Ascension, and The Hero of Ages — revolves around a street urchin named Vin and a group of rebels as they try to overthrow a tyrannical and seemingly all-powerful regime and bring peace to their troubled world.

The Mistborn movie currently doesn’t have a release date.
