Megamix showcases Black Spuma’s darker side. Energetic, synth heavy, and laced with acid, it delivers in all the best ways.

Lauer and Fabrizio Mammarella, who have collaborated as Black Spuma since 2015, have explored styles like Italo disco, house, and electro together. Known for their expansive, ever-broadening sonic landscape, they’ve returned with their long-awaited project, Megamix. This four-track EP pivots toward a darker aesthetic driven by heavy acid basslines and vocoder-infused club grooves.

Released on Mammarella’s Wrong Era imprint, the international sub-label to his Slow Motion Records, Megamix opens with the energetic synth-pop track “Das Ende.” Although its title means “the end,” the song marks a new beginning for the duo. Stripped down from the original composition, “Das Ende” contains no filler. It’s spacious, raw, and layered.

The EP then segues into the retro-laced acid house of “Glutamania,” a peak-time dancefloor instant classic. After that comes the vocoder-led title track. The latter is a dynamic, playful homage to Franz Scala, with crisp production and distorted drums.

Rounding out the EP is “You Might Be Lonely Up Here,” a hypnotic nu-disco closer. Highly atmospheric, its dark indie dance rhythm relies heavily on analog gear.

Ultimately, Megamix masterfully fuses Lauer and Mammarella’s creative chaos, blending euphoric energy with ominous club anthems as they continue to push musical boundaries. They honor the music on this EP by keeping their sound fresh and new, with a tinge of nostalgia.

Megamix is out now on Spotify or Bandcamp. Follow the duo on social media to keep up with what they do next.
