Avatar: The Last Airbender Season 2 on Netflix will change one key character from the animated series. Two of the leads recently teased that, unlike in the source material, they would have a more prominent part.
Why Ursa matters more in Netflix’s Avatar adaptation
Elizabeth Yu and Dallas Liu teased the big impact of Princess Azula and Prince Zuko’s mother, Ursa, on their characterization in Avatar: The Last Airbender Season 2 in a recent interview.
While speaking with ScreenRant, Yu shared that Ursa’s absence from her life made Azula feel abandoned and greatly resentful. She added that the villain feels abandonment not only from her estranged mother. The actress continued, “I think that she’s very much put in place this idea of, ‘It hurts. So, in order for it to stop hurting, I’m going to push it away, and not think about it, and not let it affect me, because I have to be strong.'”
Yu concluded that Azula needed to be collected and “perfect” to win what she wanted from her father, Fire Lord Ozai.
Meanwhile, Liu discussed Zuko’s different perspective on his mother, who was “everything to him.” He stressed that “all of the love” the tragic antihero received in his childhood came from his mother. Additionally, he described her as Zuko’s “support system” and the only one who truly “[rooted] for him growing up.”
The Slumber Party actor then said that Zuko remembers the “traumatic event” that led to his mother leaving him. He added that he unblocks the memory when making a decision and determining whether he is “being good or bad.”
“But it’s in this landscape of loneliness. If I’m not mistaken, it’s when he leaves Uncle Iroh to go on his own and make decisions and move forward by himself,” he explained. “So, I thought that was really touching that, when Uncle Iroh isn’t there, who is the one person that he thinks about? And it’s his mom.”
He elaborated, “And not only was Zuko’s mom that good influence on him, but she was also a courageous and hopeful and strong influence on him. It’s almost selfless, in a way. He’s willing to put himself in danger. Well, that’s Zuko all the time, honestly.”
As of writing, it’s unclear in how many episodes of Season 2, Ursa, played by Lily Gao, will appear.
