ATTLAS has returned in full force with his latest studio album, SWAN, filled with deeply personal tracks written during his recovery and healing as he steps into his new era.

Like a phoenix rising from the ashes, ATTLAS has returned to the scene. For years, the Canadian DJ and producer made a name for himself with releases on labels like mau5trap, This Never Happened, and Monstercat Silk, all featuring his signature progressive house grooves and intimate atmospheres. Now, after taking some time away from producing music, he’s entering his latest era with SWAN, which is out now via his own imprint, Tether Records.

SWAN was born out of a dark period in ATTLAS’ life, which came after enormous loss and an injury that forced him to be in a wheelchair. Creative roadblocks ensued, and after he had surgery, he began to think it wouldn’t return. But eventually, a spark arrived after finding some old project files.

“I started going through my old work and found an old me,” ATTLAS said on Instagram. “I edited, compiled. I thought, ‘There’s something here.’ In the process of recovery and healing, I started to write again. There are old ideas on SWAN I’m releasing as a way of making peace with my past to finally move forward, and new writing which foretold access to the muse again.”

ATTLAS opens up the album with its atmospheric title track. It’s dark, brooding, and a bit unsettling, which reflects where he was in life after experiencing enormous loss and an accident that led him to be wheelchair bound. Yet it isn’t all somber, as “Elora” arrives soon after, injecting uplifting melodies that help brighten the overall mood. That tune, along with “Twin Snakes” and “Rhino,” calls back to the elements ATTLAS has become renowned for: progressive house with a twinge of electro that helped define his early days of his career.

When the piano and synths on “Sitting Green On Blue” grace your ears, you’ll find yourself enamored within seconds. This track embodies everything there is to love about ATTLAS’ current work, with a mellow atmosphere that still has enough energy to carry you through the day. Placed in the middle, it serves as a perfect bridge into the album’s second half.

“Shallows” soon hypnotizes the mind with a flurry of melodies, while “Heal” switches up the vibe with some broken beats. While produced with his breakup in mind, “Mean To You” features its own swing, with vocal stabs, plucked elements, and moments of release that makes it anything but somber. Then ATTLAS delivers a one-two punch of “Morning Prayer” and “It Isn’t Everything,” with the former offering another dose of uplifting progressive moments while the latter turns the dial down for a downtempo close to this impressive body of work.
