The Hashtag Show called the A24 movie “a moving tapestry of intoxicating strangeness with pitter patter dialogue, like spoken word poetry.” They added, “Visually arresting, musically infectious, hauntingly invigorating and emotionally devastating, it demands to live inside your mind.”

Meanwhile, Courtney Howard labeled the feature “A bespoke pop-gothic pleasure that’s luxe, beguiling, barbed with razor wire & flat-out marvelous.” She also lauded everything from Hathaway and Coel’s chemistry to the production and set design.

In a separate tweet, Howard highlighted the supporting cast’s performances, deeming them impressive. However, she stressed that the David Lowery-helmed movie was primarily a “captivating, bewitching two-hander between [the two lead actresses].” She also commended their ability to maintain a “constant high-functioning level intensity’ throughout the runtime.

The Direct’s Aeron Eclarinal called Mother Mary an “absolutely riveting, wildly unpredictable, and a full-blown psychosexual pop thriller” that had him hooked. He praised Hathaway and Coel’s performances, underscoring their “raw and downright stonishing” nature.

Moreover, Ryan McQuede stressed that the film, like David Lowery’s past work, proved why he was a highly capable filmmaker.
